FCS Base Camp — June 23-27, 2025

Arrival on June 22 and departure on June 28

Formerly Textiles Base Camp and Culinary Base Camp

FCS Teacher Professional Development 5-Day Program

Join the University of Idaho Margaret Ritchie School of Family and Consumer Sciences faculty for a five-day summer workshop from June 23-27. This summer “camp” will feature professional development in 1) apparel, textiles and design; 2) early childhood development; and 3) food, nutrition and culinary topics. The workshops will be taught in person in the Niccolls Building on the University of Idaho campus in Moscow, Idaho.

5-Day Program Cost: $965  (earn 2 PD Credits)

Includes:

  • Two days of apparel, textiles and design
  • One day of early childhood development
  • Two days of food, nutrition and culinary
  • Two professional development (PD) credits will be available for participants who attend the full week. PD is included in the full-week price; no additional registration is required.
  • Seven meals - 1 breakfast, 5 lunches, and 1 dinner plus snacks

Individual Program Options

Registration for individual program options will open March 19th.

  • Apparel, Textiles, and Design: $360  (earn 1 PD Credit)
  • Early Childhood Development: $250
  • Food, Nutrition, and Culinary: $380  (earn 1 PD Credit)

Housing

On-campus housing is available to reserve for an additional cost.

Sunday, June 22, 6-8 p.m. — Arrival and Welcome Event

  • Arrive on the University of Idaho campus and get to know your fellow “campers” at this evening networking social.

Monday & Tuesday, June 23-24 — Apparel, Textiles & Design

  • Monday, 8 a.m. Breakfast and Orientation
  • Lunch included both Monday and Tuesday

Draft Workshop Topics

  • Current Events and Issues in Apparel and Textiles
    A series of presentations covering topics such as specific happenings in sustainability, workforce needs in Idaho related to apparel and textiles, opportunities, events and resources.
  • Learning Adobe Illustrator
    Learn the basics of industry-standard software Adobe Illustrator.
  • Smash and Steam
    This workshop covers sustainable earth friendly fabric dyeing techniques. We will use household or organic materials to alter the color or create patterns on fabrics. The use of mordants and plant materials can be a fun application of science for students.
  • Zero Waste Garment
    Take your Zero Waste experience to the next level. Learn to pattern and construct a garment without creating any fabric scrap waste.

Join us Saturday morning for coffee and breakfast in beautiful downtown Moscow to discuss your experience at FCS Base Camp. Network with your fellow campers, reflect on the week’s learning, develop strategies to bring it into the classroom and share with us your ideas for future base camps. As a plus, join us for the vibrant Moscow Farmer’s Market.
