Course Description

This self-paced course can be completed over the entire semester.

Participants can expect to deepen their knowledge by:

  • Identifying and explaining 3 main characteristic differences between different speech generating devices from different companies used by AAC Users.
  • Identifying 10 core vocabulary words which will assist an AAC User using a speech generating device to communicate in a variety of environments and explain why these words are so important. Additionally, they will be able to track how many times those words are used within the course of 4 days by the AAC User relationally to 10 other words.
  • Developing and implementing an activity which would facilitate expressive communication in an AAC User by encouraging them to initiate communication with peers and adults.
  • Developing a training for the AAC User’s team in the school/home environment. Training should focus on the basics of AAC and the speech generating device as well as how to facilitate expressive communication, build language skills, and be a better communication partner.

Important Fall 2025 Dates:

  • Enrollment opens August 18, 2025 and closes November 7, 2025.
  • The canvas course begins September 2, 2025.
  • The course quiz and final assignment are due December 1, 2025.
  • Grades will be posted by December 22, 2025.

Grading

This is a Pass/Fail course. No incompletes will be given. Late work will not be accepted.

Participants must earn an 80% score on all quizzes to pass the course. Quizzes can be retaken until passed.
