Historic Preservation Certificate

In partnership with University of Idaho’s College of Arts and Architecture, Continuing Adult Professional Education offers a four-course certificate program designed to take participants through core learning experiences that includes studying historical context, an understanding of historic preservation and conservation processes and other related historic preservation topics.

Fall 2026 / Spring 2027

Core Curriculum

The program includes a series of four courses, with the first two offered Fall 2026, and the final two offered in Spring 2027. The required courses include:

FALL 2026

LARC 2550C: Introduction to Historic Preservation

Learn history, theory and practice of historic preservation in the United States.

CAA 3800C: United States History of the Built Environment

Explore the built environment of the United States from pre-colonial times to present day.

SPRING 2027

LARC 3420C: Documenting and Interpreting the Built Environment

Understand research methods and techniques used to “read” a building, learn the history of a property and interpret historic context.

CAA 4800C: Applied Historic Preservation Practice

Prepare for common types of documentation and learn about public and private opportunities in the preservation field.

What You Will Learn

After completing the program’s four courses, participants will be able to:

• Understand the history of the built environment in the United States
• Become familiar with fundamental preservation law, planning and issues in the field.
• Learn research methods used in the built environment research and documentation
• Prepare common types of preservation documentation and recognize work opportunities in the field.

Who should pursue this certificate?*

• Anyone 18 years or older interested in learning about historic preservation in the United States.
• Anyone pursuing the Historic Preservation Certificate program
• Architects, Landscape Architects, Interior Designers, Planners, Designers, Art Historians, Teachers, or anyone currently working in the field needing to earn continuing education units for licensure or other professional development
