Get ready to dive into the world of auditory skill development for children with hearing loss! In this three-part interactive course, we’ll explore how children with hearing differences build auditory skills—from their earliest listening responses to more advanced stages of understanding and learning through hearing.

Course Objectives:
Participants will gain knowledge and skills to:
- Explain the stages of auditory skill acquisition and what these stages look and sound like for children who are deaf or hard of hearing.
- Explain practical, hands-on strategies to help students strengthen their listening and language skills through intentional, auditory-based teaching.
- Identify when skills are emerging and how to keep progress moving with the right level of support and challenge.
- Explain real-life examples, classroom scenarios, and strategies for fostering success through meaningful accommodations, communication supports, and purposeful IEP goals.
Session Titles and Descriptions:
Session One: Understanding the Journey of Listening Development (Auditory Function and Assessment)
In Part 1 of this series, we’ll dive into how children with hearing loss develop auditory skills—step by step. You’ll learn to recognize the key behaviors that mark each stage of auditory skill acquisition and explore the developmental hierarchy that guides progress from basic detection to comprehension.
We’ll also take a closer look at how to identify when these skills are emerging, what milestones to look for, and how to use assessments effectively to track growth. Real examples and practical tools will help you connect theory to the listening behaviors you see every day.
Session Two: Meaningful Strategies and Implementation
In this session, we’ll explore Listening and Spoken Language (LSL) strategies and research-based techniques designed to help children, especially those with hearing loss, develop strong listening and spoken language skills through intentional, everyday interactions. Through examples, demonstrations, and discussion, you’ll gain tools to seamlessly incorporate these strategies into daily routines, making every interaction an opportunity for listening and language growth.
Session Three: Case Studies
In Part 3, we’ll explore real-life examples of students’ skills and challenges. Together, we’ll work through each scenario to figure out the right accommodations and IEP goals, showing exactly how theory comes to life in the classroom. You’ll leave with practical strategies and examples that you can use right away to support your students’ learning and growth.
Required Materials
There are no outside readings or materials required for this course. Handouts are all provided in the Canvas course.
Course Requirements
- Participation: Participants are required to log into the course and proceed stepwise through the material to complete all course content.
- Complete all quizzes: Quizzes can be retaken until passed.
- Survey: Participants are required to complete a satisfaction survey.
- Final assignment: Complete the “Auditory Support” assignment: Apply the information covered in the three-webinar series to connect auditory support into real-world practice to enrich classroom learning.
Grading
This is a Pass/Fail course. Late work will not be accepted.
- Participants must earn an 80% or better on the final quiz to pass the course. Quizzes can be retaken until passed.
- Participants must earn an 80% or better on the final written assignment to pass the course.
- Participants must complete the online course satisfaction survey.
